Butterfly Island
A downloadable game for Windows
This is a game made for a 24 hour game dev challenge over on my YouTube channel - TheMagicTorch
Butterfly Island is a chilled and cozy butterfly collection game.
Play as a fuzzy animal equipped with your trusty net and set out across the island to catch all 10 butterflies for your scrapbook!

CONTROLS
WASD - Movement
RMB - Swing Net
Space Bar - Jump
ESC - Pause/Menu
With it being a 24 hour game, there are some imperfections and plenty of room for improvement, but I do hope you enjoy it none the less! If you are interested in seeing some of the development behind it and how the 24 hours went, my channel link can be found at the top of this description.
Thank you!

Install instructions
The folder is a zip folder, so you will need to extract it. Open the folder and then double click the .exe/application. The game will open up.
If you experience some stuttering within the first few seconds, don't worry - this can happen when first launching the game due to shader compilations.

I made a game and hoping to find any players to it. please test it out: https://robinandre06.itch.io/super-mario or click my profil
Game is cool, but optimization doesn't exist at all! I have 8gb of VRAM, 32 RAM DDR4, 12 core processor and i have 25-30 fps (in main menu i chose super perfomance mode by the way). Don't use unreal engine if you don't know how to optimize your game.
I think there may be more going on here. I also have 8gb VRAM and a 12 core processor and my fps is significantly higher on performance mode. 100+ comfortably.
It was a 24 hour challenge so optimisation work was limited, but it's playable; comfortably so for a spec like you are describing. As I say, there may be something more to this such as driver issues, or your pc may have got caught up compiling shaders and you need to restart the game a couple of times (these are just theories).
Just subbed to you on YT. Just wanted to reach out and say this is genuinely impressive. I hope to be able to do something like this some day. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see more from you soon!
Thank you very much for your kind words! I appreciate your support, both here and on YouTube!
I saw your youtube video and was incredibly impressed! I really want to play this, however, this is my first time downloading something from itch.io, so I don't exactly know what to do. I extracted the .exe file in the ZIP folder, then pressed on the extracted application, however, every time I start the game, it says a fatal error has occurred, and it crashes. How can I overcome this and play the game? My laptop is a new Windows Surface Pro running windows 11 if that has anything to do with it.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for checking it out!
Just to double check, when you say you extracted the .exe file from the zip folder... did you also extract the other files with it?
So you extracted the full folder. And then double clicked the .exe from within that folder?
Sorry for the late reply, to answer your question: Yes, I extracted the full folder with everything, then double clicked the .exe with the unreal engine logo. After that, the game opens, but it is extremely choppy/laggy, and then a message appears which reads "Fatal Error" and the whole thing then closes
The initial choppiness/lag is likely due to the shaders compiling - there's no 'load screen' to hide this so it will lag for a few seconds and then settle back down again.
So it sounds like it's crashing during this process. The only thing I can think of is that it's to do with the Windows Surface Pro. I was doing some quick reading and it seems the chip on the Surface Pro is different to your usual pc spec... so maybe it's an issue there. Either in terms of processing power to get past the shader compilation (which is often CPU intensive), or in terms of compatibility.
I am sorry your having issues with launching the game! It doesn't sound like something I can launch a patch for to fix unfortunately though.
VERY cool video, very cool game!
Thank you! Glad you liked both the video and the game!
What a game, couldn't stop playing until I found all 10 Butterflies. I can see how you could take this game to the next level with so much more. Even my mind was thinking of ways to make it like a survival game where the butterflies you catch can work for you or even give you items to craft with.
Well done on this game, you got some big talent.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I completely agree - there's plenty of cool ideas which could potentially be implemented for something like this!
Thank you!
